Don't tell the kids!

Ohio State Parks are as educational as they are fun! By discussing the history and geology of the Park areas with them, we can teach the kids a lot of what they will study in school. Help them identify and learn about the fossils they find...and they will think they're just having fun!

Earthquakes in Ohio!

About 15 miles north of Columbus, at Alum Creek State Park, the Ohio Earthquake Information Center records seismic activity in Ohio. This information is transmitted to the U.S. Geological Survey U.S. National Seismic Network station.

Displays, including a near-real-time display of ground motion, are in the lobby. Seismometers can be seen by the public through a window.

It's a great place for kids to learn about faults, how these zones of weakness in the Earth's crust were created, and how the continuous movement of  the tectonic plates that make up the Earth's crust can result in earthquakes.

Did You Know?

Eleven National Champion Big Trees are in Ohio. These trees are the largest known specimens of every native and naturalized tree in the United States.

You can help find more!

If you know where there's a really big tree, you can nominate it for the 2007 Champion size trees.
